Far from clear: A variety of bacteria and viruses have been implicated in causing atherosclerosis since the early 1900s, however, there have been no confirmatory studies to date. As such it wouldn't make much sense to discuss all of these since no one is going to be treated for an atherosclerosis-causing bacteria. More importantly avoiding smoking, high blood pressure, and exercise should be the goals to prevent.
