Many: According to the British Dental Association the potential for infection is higher for the tongue than any other location on the body. Swelling of the tongue can compromise the airway. Ludwig's Syndrome (Ludwig's Angina) can cause swelling & sepsis both of which can lead to death. Staphylococcus aureus / Streptococcus pyogenes can enter tissues through the piercing & lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome.
