Usually benign: The white coating on your tongue is likely just dead cells and debris which is harmless and temporary. Some people always have a white (or black) tounge because of the pigment in the papilla on the surface of the tounge. You can try scraping the surface of the tounge with a spoon (gently) to see if it comes off. There is also a small chance that it can be cancer or infection. See dentist.

Question: Were you previously taking antibiotics? If your tongue is normally pink and you've been taking antibiotics, you may have reduced the "good" bacteria levels too, and now have a yeast overgrowth. See picture enclosed. See your dentist for an examination and treatment specific for your problem.
