It is a: protein synthesis inhibitor. Proteins are the building blocks of nearly everything a cell needs to survive. If a cell cannot produce vital proteins, not only can it not reproduce, it cannot live.

Bacteriostatic: Stops replication. Does not kill bacteria. By prevention of multiplication this is effective control of susceptible bacteria.
