Gout vs heart issues: The swelling you're describing could be gout; the onset of which can occur at any age and is often the consequence of an extremely rich diet with pork, wine, salt, etc. If that's not the case then the issue is backflow from your heart (i.e. congestive failure). see your pcp; you need either a consult with rheumatology or cardiology per your PCP.
