Simplistically...: Movement of gut contents due to muscular activity of the GI tract is defined as "peristalsis." If your's is excessive, acutely increased, particularly noisy or bothersome so as to interfere with daily function then seek evaluation. Inhibition of peristalsis slows the above gut process and in some cases can quiet the rumbling.
