A member asked:

Would alternating bouts of diarrhea/constipation caused by undiagnosed al amyloidosis be chronic or come and go? i get this for 1-3 days/month only. bowels normal most of the time. several biopsies ok, but elevated k/l ratio despite k/l both in range

Irritable bowel?: Diarrhea alone would rarely be the only or main symptom of amyloidosis, either primary (AL) or secondary. If you have other reason to suspect amyloidosis, see your doctor for sure. Otherwise this sounds most like irritable bowel syndrome and probably not serious. But of course see a doctor if you remain uncertain or worried.

Not amyloid: Sorry, Brad. You're 32 years old and way too young for this. The K/L ratio is set, like most labs, so that a few percent of healthies fall outside. The pathologist who read the biopsies will be happy to stain them up for amyloid if your physician requests, but as a pathologist myself, I think it's a waste of money. It's also progressive and not intermittent like you have.
