Tongue pains: The tongue is a powerful muscle and can be strained but this would be rare. Since both sides of the tongue have recurrent, transient pains without any evidence of trauma or inflammation, I would suspect that the pains are related to a type of neuralgia or irritability of nerves in the tongue. For further advice, consult an oral surgeon or an otolaryngologist.
