Personality: is shaped by a multitude of factors such as family background, social history, genetics, lifestyle, etc. By cockiness I think you mean someone who has quick answers and arrogance. This MAY actually be due to low self esteem--needing to put others down to build up one's own sense of self worth. The measure of self worth is superficial rather than internal.
