Clean the wound: Make sure the wound is cleaned out by rinsing with large amount of water for 5 minutes. Avoid use of rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, iodine or mercurochrome as this may harm tissue or delay healing. Make sure cat has been vaccinated against rabies. Follow up with doctor if there is any difficulty with movement of hand or fingers, swelling around the wound or cat has not been rabies vaccinated

Have it seen: The bite of any animal, including a cat, can pass germs into the skin.If these reach the deeper tendons of the hand they can produce a nasty infection that can require surgery & aggressive antibiotic treatments to fix.

Cat bite: When was the cat bite? It is possible that your family member needs antibiotics as hand bites can become infected.

Specializes in Urgent Care

See MD ASAP: Cat bites are especially dangerous. Any puncture wound to the hand that causes pain needs immediate ER or Urgent Care evaluation. If significant redness and swelling are causing the pain he may need IV antibiotics. Let md cleanse in sterile fashion then elevate the extremity as high as possible. Any red streaking from hand is a medical emergency. Update tetanus and get oral antibiotics and rabies
