Type of depression: Depression affects people differently. Some lose appetite while others eat for comfort. Relieving depression will therefore increase appetite in some and decrease comfort eating in others.

Good question: Ssris work by blocking the reuptake of serotonin from neural synapses, making serotonin more available for all different types of serotonin receptors. Some of those receptors impact appetites, which is one of the reasons that decrease in sexual appetite is a common side effect. Another serotonin receptor impacts the sense of satiety. Individual response depends on relative contributions of these.
