A member asked:

Very sore throat with white buildup on tonsils. neg strep test @ urgent care. completed zpak but there's still some white buildup on tonsils 2 weeks later (now w/ some redness too - but no pain). hpv+, left tonsil larger than right. what could it be?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Varies: The more common cause of sore throats include a number of viruses. This includes the EB virus known to cause mono and a number of adenoviruses. These would be strep negative and unresponsive to any antibiotic. Some difference in tonsillar size is common. When the tonsil is truly massive it could be hiding a staph or other abscess.
