Lumbar spine: Consider l-5 disc protrusion or spinal stenosis. This is also the distribution of the sural nerve - check to see if you have an irregularity in the shape of the ankle area (lump?) that could represent something impinging on this nerve or if this numb feeling changes with movement of your foot/ankle versus movement of your spine/sleep position. Does it stop when you sleep in fetal position?
