A member asked:

I have low alkaline phosphatase levels (34). i also have abdominal pain and diarrhea (off and on). is this cause for concern?

Lab unrelated: This laboratory value (alk phosph) is unrelated to most causes of diarrhea. The exception would be a non-tuberculous mycobacteria known as mycobacterium avium, but it is rare in healthy hosts. don't worry about his lab value, but do see your physician if you have persistent, chronic diarrhea, with symptoms such as weight loss, difficulty swallowing, blood in stool, or high fevers.
