Should not: Now a days most dental procedures are done with patient's comfort being a priority. Cleaning even with tartar buildup should be a fairly painless procedure but if you feel pain let the dentist or the dental hygienist. After Friday, make sure you schedule regular visits so the build up doesn't get so bad in the future. Good luck

No: Kind of annoying rather than painful. Your Dentist/Hygienist will make you comfortable. Discuss your anxieties before treatment begins. Important that all the tarter be removed and the underlying gum/bone damage treated.
