My 76 year old mother in law has memory lapses and worries about dementia. she is also on thyroxin for thyroid problems. could that affect her memory?

Possibly.: We do recommend that thyroid function is checked if there are concerns about memory problems. This is usually done routinely as part of ongoing monitoring of thyroxine therapy. There are a number of other medical conditions that we in NZ tend to screen for if we have concerns as well as undertake a memory test such as MoCA or MMSE as part of an assessment. Recommend see the GP.

Not likely: As long as the thyroid is normal this does not play a part in her memory. Now age will and any other medical issues may. So see doctor for evaluation and if needed treatment options

Less likely : Well controlled thyroid function test should not affect memory . There can other reasons for dementia - age , too much alcohol , etc . Please consult her GP .
