Generally: it refers to a non-curable (but very treatable) long term illness. Diabetes is one example...Despite this chronic illness patients are living normall life spans! Hope this is helpful! Dr Z

Semantics: The adjective chronic is usually used to describe an illness of long onset and long duration as opposed to one of a relatively short time period of weeks or a month or two.
