Solid vs. cystic: For thyroid nodules, the 1st question asked is, "solid or cystic?". The answer has implications for treatment & prognosis. The CT scan & ultrasound (US) measure different things. CT uses X-rays to look at nuclear density (minerals vs. carbon) whereas US uses sound waves to determine if nodule is solid vs. liquid (cystic). CT uses tomography (math, faster) whereas US uses hand-scanning (slower).

Ultrasound: Uses no ionizing radiation, and has superior contrast and spatial resolution relative to standard CT for the thyroid. Additionally, if biopsy is necessary, ultrasound is used for needle guidance.
