Stress may cause: the stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin (epinephrine) to rise. Being startled or scared can also cause a release of adrenalin. This in turn causes an increase in heart and respiratory rate, as well as sweating, intestinal symptoms and a drop in blood pressure. Sometimes it triggers skipped or early heartbeats. These may be felt as a "sudden drop in chest". Dr. Anne
