Eustachian tubes: It was likely your Eustachian tubes. They connect your middle ear to your throat and allow you to equalize pressure in your middle ear when you change altitudes. What you did is called a Valsalva maneuver. This is used by flight crews and divers to prevent ruptured eardrums during pressure changes.
