Partial vs complete.: If you have a partial small or large bowel obstruction (PSBO or PLBO) then you could still pass stool, albeit with bloating, pain, possibly blood, probably a lot of discomfort. A complete bowel obstruction (SBO or LBO) would prohibit passing stool & you'd feel markedly unwell. Both partial & complete cause bloating, which obscures images on abdominal ultrasound but X-ray is better for diagnosis.
