Oral antihistamines: Hives are a result of histamine release into the skin. It can often be triggered by an allergic reaction, though the cause is often difficult to determine, which we term 'idiopathic'. You should see your pediatrician for an evaluation. Ideally, removal of the cause is best. However, to suppress further flares, your doctor likely will prescribe an oral antihistamine.
