What would cause my toenails to look light purple/red?

Circulation: Underneath your toenails are bllodvvessels. Red blood cells when oxygen is removed from them turn purple and therefore you get purple discoloration in your feet. Your feet hang down and we call this acrocyanosis. It's part of the normal physiology.

Probably normal: Temperature changes, trauma from running, standing too long or walking too much. For the most part these color changes would be quite benign. Not a major cause for concern.

Purple nails: When feet are dependent, venous blood is more sluggish in being pumped upward back to the heart. This venous blood has less oxygen and appears blueish. If you elevate your legs the blueish tinge should pink up.
