Infection?: One of three problems: injury alone could do this, but perhaps a serious one e.g. a fracture; or a bacterial infection; or perhaps an acute form of arthritis. Any of these should be professionally evaluated, so call your doctor. Get seen immiediately if any fever, or if redness and swelling are spreading or a red streak up your hand or arm.
