Many Considerations: Edema after surgery could be as straightforward as not moving much around after surgery and the legs hanging down having some swelling (dependent edema). The concern would be for a possible deep vein thrombosis (DVT) from recent surgery. The way to evaluate for this would be with an ultrasound of the leg.

Be seen: Edema refers to swelling into the soft tissues in an area, it can be caused by a number of conditions. If you have swelling in one leg after hernia surgery, you would want to be seen in part to make sure it is not a blood clot, which could be life threatening.
