Leukemia?: Does AML mean myelogenous leukemia? If so, the alk phos can stay up for many months. Remember, ALP is both a liver and bone enzyme-it can be elevated also during growth and bone marrow recovery.

No: It isn't normal to have elevated Alk phos. But it can be elevated for many reasons. If the rest of the liver enzymes are normal this elevation of alk phos is not bothersome. He just needs to be monitored

Concerning: Alk phos rises before AST and ALT when the small bile ducts are attacked, as in graft-versus-host disease. Since he also has portal hypertension, this may wellbe the explanation. He's a little old for it to be up simply because he is a growing boy. If the alk phos is not drawn fasting, folks with type O and type B blood may have an elevation that does not reflect anything more.
