Hormonal changes: The nipples and areola tissue of the breast are highly sensitive to hormonal changes in your body. If your period is delayed it may simply mean that progesterone and oestrogen levels are altered. This would cause nipple and breast tenderness and discomfort. One other explanation could possibly be pregnancy. Have you done a pregnancy test yet?

Pregnancy v. PMS: I recommend a pregnancy test. If negative and you are still late on your period, repeat the pregnancy test again in a few days to a week. Nipple sensitivity can also be a symptom of premenstrual syndrome. Finally, if the nipples are very itchy or the burning is significant, especially with any skin changes, this could be a sign of an allergic contact dermatitis.
