Blood in stool: Blood in stool is abnormal and must be explained. If it's a tiny amount of bright red blood not mixed with stool, most likely hemorrhoids or an anal fissure caused it. If there is much blood mixed with stool more serious possibilities include diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease or a growth in the colon. For persistent, heavy bleeding evaluation in the hospital emergency room is needed.
