Anemia causes: Anemia may be due to other nutritional deficiencies, e.g., folic acid, B12 or due to malabsorption. It may also be due to defects in bone marrow resulting on low production of red cells. It may be due to blood loss, usually in intestine or due to increased destruction of red cells by hemolysis. Several: Although iron deficiency is the most common, there are several other causes. Chronic blood loss is one, lead poisoning another, conditions that impair red cell production (genetic or malignancy). Docs often just do a trial at adding iron to see if the kid responds before putting the kid trough extensive tests.
