A member asked:

Is 11.2 hgb in a four year old something to worry about? could there be any other underlying cause other than iron deficiency?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

By itself, no: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is so common in growing kids that it is the default diagnosis in most cases. There are other factors on the blood count that could point to other issues, and these are reviewed by the doc. With IDA they also have smaller red cells and fewer of them. Other expensive lab tests can be ordered but for most, a month or so on iron will bring the level up. If not, test more
