Not fever: Normal temp is usually 98.0-99.6. Common causes for a low temp are thermometer malfunction, mouthbreathing, cold air exposure, early URI -uncommon) and hypothyroidism(rare). I don't think I have ever seen an ear infection cause a low temperature

Infection: In fact a low temperature can be as much a signs of an infection as a high temp. However, it's important to see what other symptoms are taking place. Cough? Fussy? Not feeding? If child appears well it's okay to monitor it. I wouldn't necessarily go in for a checkup unless child is looking ill. Like my colleague suggested, sometimes the thermometer in the ear/mouth can be inaccurate.
