My son was prescribed amoxicillin 400mg/5ml, at 9ml twice a day. is this a normal amount for a 38lbs 4-1/2 yr old boy? so about 720mg x2for 24hr perio

Adequate dose: This is a typical dose to treat an ear infection or pneumonia (high-dose amoxicillin needed). If it is for strep throat it would be more than necessary.

Yes: Years ago (two decades) the recommended dose would be less, but germ resistance has changed that. Now we dose based on type of problem and weight. The med is concentrated in urine, so we can get by with less for UTI, but for ears/sinuses/etc we give up to 80-90mg/kg/day which is where this dose fits.
