"Lightening": At 36 to 38 weeks the baby's head, if cephalic presenting, tends to "drop" into the pelvis. It won't feel like "lightening" because there will be more bladder and pelvic pressure at that time. Over the next 2 to 4 weeks, at that point, labor will start.

The baby's head: won't be below the cervix until it starts its passage through the birth canal. Strictly speaking, that means the pushing stage of labor has started. Perhaps you misunderstood the info you were given since this doesn't happen until you're well into labor. Dr. Anne
