Positional pain: Jennifer, it is not uncommon to alter pain originating form the L5/S1 disc level with changes in position or changes in footwear. Slight changes could be the difference between pain and no pain. Many people with lower back pain benefit from orthotics and shoe modification. I would encourage you to get further evaluated and consider PT which may provide additional methods to control your pain.

Alignment: Wearing high heels changed the overall alignment of the spine, which in your cares seems to be helpful. Basically, when you are in high heels your feet are plantar flexed. To avoid falling forward, your back must go into extension, which can potentially help to relieve some disc problems and aggravate others.
