Might not be a node: It could be swelling of the retrodiscal tissues because of compression of the ligaments behind the joint. Wear your night guard and you might want to try an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen

Pain/swelling: May be 2separate issues. Swollen node behind ear may not be associated with TMJ. Wear your splint as much as possible, take OTC pain meds. If not getting better in 12-24 hours, call the Dentist who made the splint.
