I can do it.....: I can perform certain procedures of the foot that could be called "cosmetic." i don't because i believe surgery should be performed to correct a deformity that is painful or disfiguring (simplified statement). So, anyone can call themselves a surgeon that performs cosmetic surgery and be truthful. A plastic surgeon is a separate medical specialty.

Of course!: It's buyer beware out there! even well-trained doctors can have bad outcomes since all surgery carries a risk but your odds are better if your surgeon has more training. Safety is paramount but so is the skill of the doctor; make sure you communicate what you want. Ask to see examples of their work so you know it is a fit and talk to prior patients. Check them out with the board of medicine.

Yes: The only plastic surgery specialty recognized by the american board of medical specialties (abms) is plastic and reconstructive surgery (plastic surgeons certified by the american board of plaatic surgeons). Facial plastic surgery is also a sub specialty of ENT recognized by the abms. Bottom line , always check your "cosmetic surgeon"s credentials.

Cosmetic Surgeon: You always need to research the physician and see if they are board certified and members in good standing with the medical board. Also inquire as to the various medical associations they belong to. Ultimately, word of mouth in the community and referenced from your primary care doctor are helpful.

Board Certifified: It is true any doctor can claim to be a cosmetic surgeon, and there are terrifying cases of that going wrong. There is only one plastic surgery board certification from the american board of medical specialties. It so very important for anyone considering a procedure to research the surgeon's background, qualifications, and certifications. Follow your instincts.

Yes: Yes, patients should be very careful about selecting a “cosmetic surgeon”. Unfortunately, there is no institution protecting the consumer.I would suggest starting with the american society of plastic surgery to obtain a list of well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons. Arrange consultations and ask to see his/her before-and-after pictures and to potentially meet with previous patients.
