Straining BM?: If you are needing to strain to move your bowels, perhaps you are constipated? Straining at stool can cause tissue damage in the rectum or anus and even inguinal hernia, all of which can refer pain to your sides or back. If you feel constipated, or your stools are unusually hard, drink lots of water, add fiber to your diet (e.g. Metamucil powder), and if necessary try a mild stool softener.
