Gold: Oldest, most durable, most gentle to opposing teeth, most conservative and longest lasting but not always most expensive--not dependent on price of material, but cost of labor. Most expensive is usually cosmetic porcelain--though most cosmetic, other characteristics are opposite of gold.

Gold: Gold is short answer. There are more durable metal alloys but they are also more difficult to fit and are too hard on the opposing teeth. Tooth colored crowns are evolving very rapidly and while a bruxzir crown may have been the most durable tooth colored crown last month that could have already changed.

"gold" standard: Gold is probably the most durable of crown materials. It doesn't fracture. It doesn't cause significant wear of the opposing teeth. You have to be careful that it is not too thin on the chewing surface, but otherwise it will last for decades if taken care of. With the cost of gold these days, it is the most expensive material as well.

Least important : All metal crowns are indestructible (although you can get decay around any type of crown). Gold crowns are generally the most costly as compared to other metal crowns and crowns made from other materials. However, there are two important things to consider. First it's the expertise of the dentist that is key and secondly, different dentists have different fees based upon skill, costs & expertise!

Crowns: In my opinion, the time tested, most durable crown material is high noble gold. You might not approve of the esthetics of this material because it is yellow. A newer tooth colored material that is being used is zirconia. Zirconia is very hard and doesn't break very easily, but it wears the opposing teeth heavily. As for crown brand, each lab puts its spin on naming crown types.
