No: Many hairline fractures of the patella can be managed with a brace instead of a cast. They are lighter & easier to care for especially for an elderly patient.

Yes: For an undisplaced fx she'll do well with a cast for about 6 weeks, to allow it to heal properly and without complications. Will require need pt later on to increase motion and strength in muscles.
