Blood cultures: Listeria testing is best done when one is acutely ill typically through blood cultures. Pregnant women with high fever, diarrhea, myalgias and headache in whom no other more common cause can be identified may be tested. For a potential infection more than a month ago typically no testing is done and fetal surveillance through basic prenatal care and ultrasound are done.
