Maisonneuve fracture: This spiral fracture of the fibula is commonly associated with several ankle ligament injuries. If this is what he had his ankle should be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon.

Get him seen ...: Sport is pretty important and he should be guided by surgeon / physio / sports physician back to full performance (if possible) and advised if this isn't possible. With ankle injury of sufficient force to fracture bone he is at some risk of syndesmotic (high ankle) sprain which can require more intensive treatment. Discuss with GP or Orthopaedic Surgeon ...

Fracture: you can expect some pain on strenuous exercise and tell him to take it easy and see a physiotherapist. Graduated return to sports will help

Get seen : Sometimes if no ongoing bony injury there in fact can be problems with Achilles function or other muscles and ligaments of the heel. A sports or musculoskeletal medicine opinion if you can afford it would be very useful particularly if he's fairly serious re cricket. If you're in the Waikato I can recommend someone.

Could be: What is hurting the ankle or the ribs? The ribs take a very long time to heal and may still be sore for some time. Same is true to the ankle but not as much if there was not tear found. It could be causing problems if it was a severe sprain but should be well mended by now. If it hurts when he plays and is bothering him he should have a doctor or physio take a look at him.
