Could be.: If you're saying you went from no abdominal exercise to doing too many crunches, then it could be that your upper abdominal musculature is strained, and stretching them while lying down increases the discomfort. If so, this could really take a week or so to resolve. Stop doing the crunches for now, and if pain persists then see doctor for entertainment of other possibilities.
