Reflux esophagitis: simply put: the contents of the stomach, mainly acid, stayed for a long time outside of the stomach up in the esophagus where they shouldn't be, causing inflammation of the lining of the esophagus hence the term, and that what causes heart burn and other symptoms. As for the causes for the reflux itself, they are numerous, most common are diet (e.g. fat, caffeine,) being overweight, drugs, etc..

A 42-year-old member asked:

Is it safe to give my baby medication for acid reflux?

Yes: As prescribed by your physician, reflux medication is very safe. There is a small risk of abnormal movements, and platelet disorders, but I have never seen it. The risk from erosive esophagitis, poor nutrition, and weight loss generally outweigh the small risk due to the reflux medications. Make sure you are also following reflux precautions, like keeping the baby upright after eating.

Sometimes: Acid reflux can be treated medically such as with Omeprazole or with surgery. It is possible to 'cure' the acid reflux if the surgery is successful.

Trial of medication: A brief answer is to try medication to reduce stomach acid such as Pepcid (famotidine) or Omeprazole would be helpful. The evaluation of abdominal pain as a general rule can be tricky and i would encourage discussing this with your physician to avoid missing a serious medical problem.

Cancer: Acid reflux has shown to dramatically impair quality of life comparable with more major medical problems such as heart disease or major depression, especially if it impairs sleep. The most serious problem has been barrett's esophagus (a change in the lining of he swallowing tube) and an increased risk of esophageal cancer.
