Cervical spondylitis: Spondylitis is inflammation of the spine, so cervical spondylitis is swelling or inflammation of the spine in the neck, from the first through the 7th cervical vertebra (C1-C7). This is also often called spondyloarthritis, because the inflammation is in the joints of the spine. More common is cervical spondylosis, which is degenerative arthritis changes that commonly occur with aging.

Cervical refers to the neck and Spondyl refers to the spine. Itis means inflammation. So, cervical spondylitis is inflammation of the spine in the neck region. Think of it as "neck arthritis."
