Maybe: Pain is an awareness centered in the brain. If you're not conscious ( not enough blood flow to cerebral cortex) then you''re not "aware". This is different from the body reacting to stimuli that bypasses the brain such as touching something hot. You pull back quickly before your brain senses how hot it is.
