Menses: Early (pre-cycle) or residual (post-cycle) changes in the uterine lining is one reason. However, depending on the stage of your reproductive life (e.g. menopause), this can be abnormal. Sometimes infection and neoplasms (e.g. abnormal growths) can present with such symptoms. The most likely reason is what I summarized initially.
