Depends: I assume your talking materials. There are some great materials that can be bonded to teeth, but still the material with the longest and best track record is gold. However, many people do not like the looks of it in the front and a tooth colored material is more appropriate. There are many options depending upon the situation.

Material vs. Skill: Properly done, the current filling materials are very good. However, the bonding used is a critical component for longevity. Many of the newer current crown materials are really in a search and experimental state that will be evolving over the next years. No matter what material is used, the real determining factor is the skill of the dentist placing the material.
