?????: Only way to know is to see your asthma specialist for testing. Asthma does have a genetic link and hereditary roles, but you first need to see if this is the problem.It could be something else. Start off with the most obvious causes, then look for alternative diagnoses. Your friendly allergy/asthma specialist can diagnose and help.

Numerous causes: Being short of breath is a very vague statement and can have a number of causes. These can range from the "simple" like being out shape to more serious diseases. If one is short of breath then immediate evaluation is needed to rule out life threatening causes and institute a thorough evaluation.

Many things....: There are many causes of shortness of breath and asthma is only one of them. In order to find out what your shortness of breath is due to, you need an evaluation by your physician, the sooner the better as shortness of breath can be a medical emergency. Go to the er should your shortness of breath worsen in any way.
