Multiple: Shortness of breath may be caused by a number of underlying conditions, including asthma, cardiac disease, embolism, muscle fatigue and pulmonary hypertension. Your physician may order a pulmonary function test with and without a bronchodilator, an EKG and a Chest radiograph after obtaining a detailed medical history and physical examination to help determine the cause.
