Rheumatic Disease: Hi Jessie, Acute rheumatic fever, isn't due to group A strep spreading to the heart. If strep throat remains untreated, the symptoms will resolve, however the bacteria will remain and cause an autoimmune response that can affect the heart within weeks of the initial throat infection. Therefore, it is very important to treat strep throat if it is suspected, or as soon as it is diagnosed.
